Things you should know when starting college

I went to a graduation party last weekend. The daughter of a family friend had graduated from high school, and was starting college next year. I gave her some starting college advice, and I realized that I have given this same advice several times, so I decided to post it here for everyone.

Now, this advice might not be applicable to every student at every university; there are exceptions to everything. This is mostly stuff I wish people had told me when I was starting college.

1. Don’t take 8 am classes

2. No really, don’t take 8 am classes. If you are a morning person in High School, you might not be in college. There is a tendency to stay up later in college. Nothing wrong with that, just take that into account when scheduling classes. If your mommy wakes you up in the morning, you are NOT a morning person, I don’t care what time she wakes you up.

3. Have a campus map handy when scheduling classes. Otherwise you may end up walking the entire length of the campus between each class. From personal experience, I can say that this sucks.

4. Take advantage of free food whenever possible. But don’t be a jerk. If a friend’s family invites you for a meal, write a thank you note, it will blow their mind.

5. If you live on campus, try not to use the dorm laundry room when everyone else is (Saturday morning and afternoon).

6. Same goes for the cafeterias.

7. Try not to take classes on Fridays. It may take a few years to pull it off, but it is worth it.

8. Develop relationships with your professors. Try to find someone that can be a mentor; the best professor that teaches in your major.

9. Pick a major. Maybe not right away, but don’t end up with a degree by default.
